Richard's HPmove

PICTURE DESCRIPTION

Today a bunch of us got together to help Richard Guy Briggs move to his new house. Of course, some members of the Human Powered Vehicle Operators of Ottawa showed up to move quite a bit of Richard's stuff with HPVs. We moved three loads of stuff by bike, with various people / equipment on each trip: Richard's Greenspeed tandem trike, with massive cargo trailer, Vic and Juergen's mountain bikes and home-built cargo trailers, and a few other people hauling "Chariot" style kids trailers. Here's my bike getting ready to go with a very heavy trunk on the trailer deck.

A few of the bikes are almost ready to go. Jody is securing the cargo trailer with a bunch of boxes, box spring, mattress, and table legs. The green trailer in the background is carrying some boxes.

Another view of the vehicles. Notice the specially imported caffeinated Mountain Dew! Mmmm.

I added a chair to my load, partially for visual effect.

Back at the old apartment, Richard starts strapping the canoe to the trike's roof racks. The trailer is getting loaded up too.

Here's Juergen following behind the trike, as we go up Greenfield.

A little further up Greenfield, some guys in a car slow down to see what we're up to. Juergen chats for a sec, and passes off one of our business cards. We ended up speaking to many people today, and handed out tons of HPVOoO business cards.

As you can see, the canoe also functions as a streamlined sun umbrella!

Jody backs the trike up into Richard's driveway. That's not the easiest thing to do with such a large rig!

Hey, get back to work!

I took the stoker position on the trike back to the old apartment, for the final load. Here's a video clip of what it's like to be riding in the back of the trike.

We loaded some of Richard's office stuff onto the trailer for the final load. Some boxes, stereo cabinet, desk, chair, monitor.... Wait a sec! It looks like an office! We decide to make this the Mobile Office theme ride.

Next time we do this, we definitely need to power the computer, and possibly have wireless Internet. Something to do for Linux In The Wild!

Richard is captaining the trike, and I'm in the stoker's position. My view is blocked a little by Jody's bike...he didn't need it, since he was in the Office. :-)

A fantastic view of my helmet...and Jody too, as we ride down Main St.

Although we were warned a little earlier, we completely forgot about the 10km running race that was in progress. Because of this, we couldn't cross Pretoria Bridge for about an hour. We took advantage of this situation by chatting with a bunch of curious onlookers, and we also had time to stop at the Royal Oak for a round of Crown Floats.

I took these pictures from the top floor of the Royal Oak.

This police officer wouldn't let us go through, even when the race had thinned out to only a few people walking by. Other pedestrians in-line skaters, and cyclists (some with trailers) were zooming through. We pulled up to wait for an opening and his permission to get through, but he got a bit hostile with us, and told us back right up, past where we had been parked. He even threatened to have the vehicle impounded (good luck!). He finally let us through when there was barely a trickle of people coming by.

After stopping at the Beer Store to return some empties and pick up some full ones, I took over the Mobile Worker position, and we rode the last few blocks to Richard's new place.
